Quercus Suber

Common name: Cork Oak

Year planted: 2026

Country of origin: Western Mediterranean Area

Year introduced: First introduced to the UK in the late 17thC

Description: An ancient species of Oak which has been around since the tertiary period. It has developed a very thick cork bark as a natural defence against forest fires enabling it to bounce back. The thickness of the bark has meant that cork can be sustainably harvested from the tree and has been used for a variety of reasons in the past including fishing floats and the cork for wine bottles. A slow growing evergreen tree with leaves glossy above and felty below. Although rated as hardy we will see how it does in this position
